Countdown to Baseball Season
“People ask me what I do in the winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.” — Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby
It’s the middle of February. There is snow on the ground, temperatures are below 40, and the sun won’t poke out more than a few times until March. That can only mean one thing… baseball season?
Later this week, pitchers and catchers will be reporting to spring training, marking the official beginning to baseball’s preseason. Although the first couple of weeks are just for training and conditioning, the sight of players occupying the field is enough to pump me up for the upcoming season. Before we know it, it will be March, and spring training games will begin.Yeah, they’re not very exciting, and the pitchers don’t pitch very far into the games, but it’s still baseball to me. I love the passion in the young players trying to make their first MLB team; their dreams depend on their performance in the spring, so they will be trying as hard as possible to make it on the big league roster.
I love seeing the teams come together, the personalities mesh, and the chemistry develop. These are the guys that will spend a lot of the next 6 months together, so if they can’t become a team, then they’re in trouble.
The passion, the energy, and the excitement to get back to baseball is infectious.
